A new bachelor’s degree and minor at Purdue’s College of Technology at Richmond is expanding education and career options for students in east central Indiana and west central Ohio.

The new bachelor of science degree in computer graphics technology will serve two populations. First, it offers recent high school graduates the only publicly supported four-year degree in the field in the region. Second, students who have already completed an associate degree in the field will be able to enhance their career options with additional education.

Leaders at the location believe they also are serving the needs of regional industry with the offering.

“This degree is a very marketable merging of the creative, artistic and technical. Graduates of this program will be prepared for a variety of careers in support of information technology, communication and media, entertainment, electronic gaming, education, manufacturing, production, design or operations,” said Michael Swain, director of College of Technology at Richmond.

“Computer graphics are increasingly essential for learning, communicating, and reaching audiences or customers.  Many careers in this field now require a bachelor’s degree for initial placement.  We have offered an associate degree in computer graphics for many years and are delighted that students can now continue with their Purdue bachelor’s degree right here in Richmond,” said Swain.

The degree can be tailored for several career options, from graphic layout to illustration, web design or mobile phone app design. Classes are also available in 3D modeling, animation and human-computer interaction.

The location has also added a minor in computer and information technology, offering courses in programming, internet technologies, information architecture and systems development.

Because the location is an extension of the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, the computer graphics technology program will follow the same academic requirements. The Richmond location serves full and part-time students in Fayette, Franklin, Henry, Jay, Randolph, Union and Wayne Counties in Indiana and Butler, Darke, Mercer, Shelby, Van Wert and Preble Counties in West Central Ohio.

The bachelor of science degree in computer graphics technology adds to the Richmond location’s other Purdue B.S. degrees in engineering technology, industrial technology and organizational leadership and Supervision.  An associate of science degree in mechanical engineering technology is also offered.
